Olympics: Who will win Gold?

With the Summer Olympics around the corner which Country will win the Gold in baseball?

None, baseball is no longer on the Olympic program; it was voted out in 2005.

Also, there is the misconception that MLB created the WBC in response to the IOC's decision to eliminate baseball. The truth is that MLB was planning a World Cup type event as early as 2002, three years before the IOC voted to remove baseball from the Olympic Program. Many people think that MLB's creation of the WBC was a reaction to the IOC's elimination of baseball; not the case. It had been originally planned for 2005, but due to obstacles it was pushed back to 2006 instead. Maybe the confusion is due to the WBC being introduced around the same time as the IOC's news on baseball's Olympic exclusion was released. Here is an excerpt from a Taipei Times article from June 2003:
Quote:
Major league baseball's staff made a presentation Tuesday on a proposed World Cup that could start before the 2005 season. The proposal was very broad and there are many details still to be determined. While commissioner Bud Selig has said he is in favor of a World Cup, major league baseball has not made any decisions on whether to proceed with a tournament, how many nations to include and where to play the games. The presentation was made to the task force Selig appointed in January, which is called "Major League Baseball in the 21st century."

Both baseball and softball were voted out in 2005, but now both respective sports federations are working on a joint bid for reinstatement in the 2020 games.

Thanks for pointing that out, last time the IOC voted there was an air of Rugby 7 and Golf being the favorites, but baseball wasn't an underdog by any stretch. The disturbing part was, that there were rumors of IOC members being dissuaded from voting in baseball's favor. A successful joint bid will make baseball/softball the favorite to enter the 2020 Olympic program, but unlike the 2016 game votes, there will only be room for one more sport.

The Netherlands beat Cuba (2-1) and win the IBAF World Cup
