McRae is pulling for Duncan

McRae is pulling for Duncan
By Rick Hummel

Chris Duncan dives for but misses an RBI triple hit by Mark Teahen during the game Tuesday.

KANSAS CITY In the midst of the worst slump of his brief big-league career, Cardinals left fielder Chris Duncan did not start against Kansas City lefthander Odalis Perez on Wednesday night and headed off for some extra work.

Hitting coach Hal McRae has impressed on Duncan that he is not using his hands enough in his swing, relative to the rest of his body.

"His hands are kind of stagnant," McRae said. "We're going to use a tried-and-true method."

McRae probably outlined the cure a little more than manager Tony La Russa fearful of giving the opposition any fodder would have liked. McRae said one of the "tried and true" methods of fixing a hitter, at least temporarily, was to pull the ball. This would enable Duncan to get his hands through the hitting zone quicker than he had been when he was hitting to all fields. "Just for a while, just to get his hands active," McRae said. <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- // begin DisplayAds("Frame1","",""); // --> </script><script language="JavaScript1.1" src="[email protected]" type="text/javascript"></script>

"When you do that, you don't think mechanics. It's a thought process. So the thought process is to pull the ball and you forget about mechanics. You start there and you make adjustments from there, but that's the first stage of your adjustment.

"We tried it before. When he got going last year in Cincinnati, that's how he got going."
