Mariners Hand Rays Heartbreaking Loss

SEATTLE – Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon took a calculated risk Tuesday night and put faith in his new closer. Maddon, a man who heavily relies on the statistics from his trusty laptop, instead opted for the instincts in his head.

He admitted that he left reliever Seth McClung with little room for error in the bottom of the 10th in a tied game, choosing to intentionally walk both Adrian Beltre and Raul Ibanez to load the bases with Ichiro Suzuki already at third in order to pitch to Richie Sexson with one out.

"I put him in a tough spot," Maddon said. "I absolutely put him in a tough spot. I just felt it was the best option at that point based on that the two guys before him had been so hot."
