INDIANS 5, PADRES 2
at Goodyear, Ariz.
Monday, March 30
Indians at the plate: Behold, a Pronk sighting. Travis Hafner went deep for the first time this spring, connecting with a hanging breaking ball served up by Kevin Correia in the second inning and hammering it out to right-center field. It was one of the few times Hafner, working his way back from right shoulder surgery, has really driven the ball this spring. In the third inning, Grady Sizemore singled home a run with two on, and Shin-Soo Choo added a sacrifice fly. Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first homer of the spring, a solo shot, in the eighth.

Padres at the plate: The Friars took advantage of a Jhonny Peralta fielding error to manufacture a run in the first. David Eckstein reached on the error, moved to second when Brian Giles walked and scored on a Chase Headley single. In the second, Eckstein drove in a run with an RBI single. Eckstein is hitting .426 this spring.

Indians on the mound: In his penultimate tuneup before the start of the regular season, Carl Pavano had one of his strongest outings of the spring. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He induced nine ground-ball outs. Ed Mujica, destined for the waiver wire, got the last out of the seventh.

Padres on the mound: Correia's biggest mistake was hanging that curveball to Hafner, but he also walked three batters. In all, he was charged with three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a wild pitch in five innings. Right-hander Eulogio De La Cruz worked two innings. He was effective in the sixth but struggled in the seventh. He was charged with a run on two hits with two walks, three strikeouts and a wild pitch.
