Burke getting a chance to settle in

A year ago, Chris Burke kept a handful of different gloves in his locker while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks, never sure which he would need on any given day.

In all, Burke played six different positions for the Arizona Diamondbacks -- shortstop, right field, third base, second base, left field and first base -- which gave D-backs manager Bob Melvin some flexibility, though Padres general manager Kevin Towers thinks it may have hurt Burke.

"I don't know if he's ever really gotten a chance to show what he can do," Towers said.

Burke, a non-roster invitee to Padres camp, figures to use far fewer gloves this spring, as he will mostly be looked at in the middle infield, especially shortstop, where he could very well end up pushing projected starter Luis Rodriguez.

Burke, who turns 29 on March 11, understands his versatility has helped him and might continue to do so. But, as he said, being able to settle into one position would be much better for him.

"It's tough to say. I know that playing different positions will allow a manager flexibility with his roster and his lineup," Burke said. "But as a player, selfishly, it is certainly nice to find a comfort zone and a place to call home."

Burke hit .194 with the D-backs last season, though he's not willing to pin those struggles on bouncing around the diamond defensively or the outfield.

"In 2006, I played all over the field in Houston, and that was my best year," Burke said. "Last year, I played all over the field, and it was my worst year.

"I get paid to do a job, so I'm not going to blame my poor play on playing left field one day and shortstop the next. The fact is I didn't have a good year, and I'm hoping I can bounce back from that."
