McCutchen takes questions from fans

Rookie outfielder Andrew McCutchen took part in a live online chat with Pirates fans on Tuesday afternoon from PNC Park. During the chat, McCutchen answered questions about playing in Pittsburgh, his teammates, his experiences in baseball and more. The complete transcript follows.
bucco1445: What is your favorite part about the Steel City?

a_mccutchen: Just playing on the field at PNC Park, because I think it is one of the best in the MLB. Especially the Roberto Clemente bridge in the background.

beast0069: Andrew, you wear No. 22. Is that Clemente plus one? What I'm asking is, What's behind the number 22? Have you worn that number before?

a_mccutchen: Nope, I've never worn 22 before. I just pretty much wore what they gave me.

jm_bucsfan: What is the biggest adjustment you've had to make in the big leagues vs. the Minors?

a_mccutchen: There was really no big adjustment. Just to keep the same approach that you had in the Minor Leagues. If you try to do too much, it could create errors. So I try not to let the big league lights intimidate me.

joe1118: Cutch, what were you doing when you got the call up to the Majors?

a_mccutchen: My game got rained out, and I was sleeping at the time. My phone was on silent, and I just happened to wake up and look at the phone when it was going off.

bigjake42: How did your first stolen base in the Majors feel?

a_mccutchen: I just felt like I got there in two seconds. If the base was 95 feet away, I STILL would have made it, because I slid way past the bag. It was a good thing they didn't throw the ball down to second.

StephenW: What is your best time for the 60-yard dash?

a_mccutchen: 6.2

pitsburgh: Do you think there is any difference playing in a Major League ball park vs. a Minor League ballpark?

a_mccutchen: There is, because there are more fans, and the ball carries more because of the size of the stadium. In the Minors, the ball may not carry as far in certain parks because it isn't covered or protected as much from the wind.

bucsbrgade: Andrew, I believe Pirates fans to be some of the most loyal in the league. How do you feel about playing at PNC Park and making Pittsburgh your new home?

a_mccutchen: Pittsburgh is a lot different from where I'm from in Florida, but besides the confusing streets, Pittsburgh is a fun place to play and a fun place to be.

kceagles21: Where was your favorite place to play while in the Minors?

a_mccutchen: I'd have to say in Indianapolis when I played with the Indians because of the stadium and the city. It is a Minor League team in a big league city.

HamburgBucco: What's better: Hitting a home run or robbing a home run from opposing hitters at the wall?

a_mccutchen: I'd probably have to say robbing the hitter of a home run, because the looks on their faces are always priceless.

mlbfan94: Have you met Pedro Alvarez, and what do you think of him?

a_mccutchen: I've met him. He's a great guy and a class athlete, and it is going to be great to play alongside him whenever he gets to Pittsburgh. He brings a lot to the table, power being his best asset.

jbayfan: Who is the funniest guy in the clubhouse?

a_mccutchen: It would probably have to be between Delwyn Young or, believe it or not, Garrett Jones. Garrett Jones is funny? Yep.

newell61: Are you looking forward to playing alongside Lastings Milledge?

a_mccutchen: I look forward to it, because I played against him when I was in the eighth grade and he was in the 10th grade. That was the first time I played against him. Coming up through high school, a lot of people compared me to him.

aberd1969: Hello, Andrew, welcome to Pittsburgh. Simple question today. Can you tell me the name of the song that is played when you're walking up to bat? I like the beat!

a_mccutchen: Black Eyed Peas -- I'm a Bee

mlb4ver: Andrew, in your brief stint in the Majors so far, who has been the toughest opponent on the mound you have faced?

a_mccutchen: I'd have to say Rich Harden. He throws a really good changeup. He keeps his opponent off balance.

showwn: There was a lot of talk about how you were rushed through the system in your first couple of pro years. How did you deal with the added pressure of each new level?

a_mccutchen: You just don't listen to things outside of the field. That's how you deal with it the best, because that will keep you more focused on just baseball.

goPIRATES09: Who was your favorite player growing up?

a_mccutchen: Ken Griffey Jr. I used to try to hit like him batting right-handed. In my second year of baseball. in Spring Training. I met him for the first time. So now I have a story to tell my kids -- whenever I have some.

bucsbrgade: What is the best piece of advice, baseball-related or non-baseball- related, that you have received, and from who?

a_mccutchen: I would have to say when a guy told me that I should start playing like I was the best player, start acting like I was the best player, and that would make me the best player. A guy told me that when I was in Double-A.

yabuckos: How did it feel to get your first hit in the bigs?

a_mccutchen: It surprised me, because in Triple-A that wouldn't be a hit. The shortstop makes that play. What I mean is, the infield grass is so much shorter, the ball gets through the infield quicker.

a_mccutchen: All right everyone -- I'll take one more question, and then I've got to get to work!

bucmaster1: Do you ever get nervous playing in front of so many people?

a_mccutchen: I always get nervous before the first pitch of my at-bat. But then after that it goes away.

Cubsdabam7: How did you feel when you hit your first MLB home run?

a_mccutchen: One more -- a good one. It was in Minnesota, and when it went out, I didn't see it, so I ran to second base not knowing if it bounced over or actually went out. So I actually just kept running until someone stopped me.
