Morgan-McClure Motorsports hopes for rebirth at Talladega

Later this month, Morgan-McClure Motorsports will step back to its beginnings, almost 26 years to the day after a handful of crewmen and a local driver took an old car to Talladega and were just glad to be there.

The legendary NASCAR team that started at the bottom in 1983, and rose to the top throughout the 1990s, will be starting over again at the bottom on April 26 when it attempts to make the “Aaron’s 499” at Talladega Superspeedway.

Morgan-McClure ran its first competitive laps at Talladega on May 1, 1983, with late Johnson City driver Connie Saylor behind the wheel.

Although the car ran only 22 laps that day and finished 40th before retiring with engine troubles, Eric McClure recalls that first being a victory simply by being there. And that’s all that Eric McClure, the nephew of team owner Larry McClure, hopes to accomplish on April 26 when he attempts to make the race in his uncle’s car.
