Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left hand on Saturday, retroactive to May 7, just hours after the Cuban slugger said he was feeling 100 percent and excited to be back.
To take his place on the roster, the A's recalled outfielder Michael Taylor.
Cespedes has said he first felt the injury about 10 days ago, but it went away and did not cause him to miss any time. Then on Tuesday, he aggravated it during batting practice and had to be scratched from the lineup. He seemed to be improving each day, and just over three hours before the first pitch of the game against the Tigers on Saturday, he smiled as he talked with reporters about how eager he was to get back in the lineup.
