Mets Mets, Granderson agree to four-year deal

Quote:
Starved for both outfield production and home run power throughout last summer, the Mets addressed both needs on Friday by signing Curtis Granderson to a four-year, $60 million contract.

A source confirmed on Friday afternoon that Granderson has agreed to the richest deal Sandy Alderson has given out in four offseasons as Mets general manager. The Mets have not commented on the deal, which is pending a physical. The New York Post first reported Granderson's signing.

Granderson, 32, hit .229 with seven homers last season in a campaign largely decimated by injuries. A fractured right forearm and fractured left pinkie, each the product of hit-by-pitches, limited him to 61 games.

Prior to that, Granderson spent two seasons as one of the league's most prodigious power hitters, averaging 152 games played per year. Thanks in part to Yankee Stadium's short right-field porch, Granderson hit 84 home runs from 2011-12, increasing his annual average to 29 homers since becoming a full-time starter with the Tigers in 2005. Along the way, he developed a reputation as a positive clubhouse presence and leader.

Granderson is a career .261 hitter with extreme platoon splits: a .274/.357/.519 slash line against right-handed pitching, but just .226/.295/.409 against lefties. Once a dangerous basestealer, who swiped a career-high 26 bags in 27 tries in 2007, Granderson has stolen a combined 18 bases over the past two seasons.

Philip Kossoy here...I like this deal for the Mets. Some say it's Jason Bay all over again, but I say no. Granderson is used to the NY spotlight and should be a good hitter for at least 3 of the 4 years. With a little luck he could be like Carlos Beltran looking for big $$$ after age 35. Remember, he's not going to be 41 like Robinson Cano will be when his contract is up!

I think Granderson isn't Bay. Bay's numbers had the benefit of playing at Fenway to really boost his power and his payday. Granderson hit 30 home runs here in Detroit one year. His power is really legit.
