Mets Capuano sharp as Mets top A's, take series

Quote:
Led by a stellar performance from starter Chris Capuano, the Mets closed out their six-game homestand with a 3-3 record, beating the A's, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Capuano left the game after the sixth inning with discomfort in the left side of his abdomen but did not allow a run or a walk while striking out seven batters. He gave up four singles and a double and stranded five runners in scoring position.

The Mets broke through in the second with help from Jason Bay, who rebounded from his 0-for-5 Wednesday night by leading off the inning with a hard single through the left side of the infield. Lucas Duda and Josh Thole followed with singles before Capuano brought Bay home by grounding into a double play with the bases loaded.

The Mets added a second run when Jose Reyes hit a bouncing ball that just slipped past A's starter Graham Godfrey and into center field for a base hit.

The A's threatened in fourth, loading the bases with a two-out rally that included two singles and a hit batsman. Capuano escaped, though, by reaching back for a 91 mph fastball on the inside corner at Landon Powell's knees to strike the catcher out looking.

As Capuano cruised, the Mets tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Reyes hit a grounder between first and second base fielded by second baseman Jemile Weeks. As Godfrey sprinted to cover the bag, Weeks threw the ball away, allowing Reyes to reach on an error. Reyes moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout before Daniel Murphy, back in the cleanup spot after a day off Wednesday, singled up the middle to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

Reyes again reached on an error in the next inning when his foul popup was dropped by first baseman Mark Ellis. Two pitches later, he hit a line drive to center field to score Thole from third and give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

The A's cut the deficit to three in the eighth when Weeks drew a leadoff walk from reliever Pedro Beato and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Conor Jackson.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth inning, earning his 20th save.

The game's first pitch was delayed for two hours, 15 minutes because of rain.
