Mets Spring Training Buzz Thread

While most of the focus yesterday was on the starter, Oliver Perez, could the forgotten Alay Soler wind up crashing the party? Soler followed Perez with two scoreless innings in the Mets' 5-4 loss to the Tigers, and manager Willie Randolph had nothing but praise for the Cuban defector, who had fallen off the radar screen lately.

"He's in a lot better shape," Randolph said. "When I'm working out in the morning, he's right next to me, hitting the treadmill and hitting the weights and stuff. When you see him from a distance on the field, he did look a lot slimmer. Give him some credit."

Still, Soler remains pretty low on the list of candidates, and would need a number of them to flunk out to make the Opening Day roster. Mets Spring Training Buzz

It's not as if yesterday at Tradition Field had an October feel, even if the Cardinals were in the other dugout. This is the Grapefruit League, after all, and it's not as if the Mets still were seeing red after losing to St. Louis in the NLCS.

The Cardinals did bring Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen, and Chris Carpenter opposed Tom Glavine in what should be a preview of Opening Night at Busch Stadium. But when it was over and reporters joked with manager Willie Randolph about the importance of getting back to .500 (1-1) after the first two games, he was quick to play along.

"I was waiting for the question from you guys: 'Do you feel like you got payback from last year?"' Randolph cracked.

At least Cardinals manager Tony La Russa gave some props to Randolph's crew before the game. "Based on what the Mets did last year, and all their pluses, no disrespect to Atlanta or anybody, Philadelphia. They're the team to beat," La Russa said. Mets Spring Training Buzz

Judging by the crowd reaction, it definitely sounded as if there were more Mets fans in attendance yesterday in Fort Lauderdale, and that's too bad for them. Catching your favorite team on the road is always a dicey proposition in spring training, but this year has been the worst in recent memory, with the stars staying home more frequently.

Check out yesterday's lineup. The Mets did not use a single starter, and the only ones who could be considered "regular" players were Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro and maybe David Newhan. The defending NL East champions? Not yesterday's squad. No way, no how.

When asked about recent trend, GM Omar Minaya said the starters will be making more trips later in the schedule as Opening Day creeps closer. Keep that in mind if you're hoping to catch the Mets away from Tradition Field in the coming weeks.

"I wish I could say that had something to do with it. It was just a matter of having really bad control today." - Philip Humber when asked if his poor outing was the result of opening jitters

I would be mad as heck if I took time off to follow the team. You should instead go to a AAA team during the season!

I understand that it is spring training, but you should at least see some of the regulars!!!

It's still early, but seeing David Wright hitting in the No. 2 hole for the second time was enough to raise a few questions after the Mets' 2-1 loss to the Indians at Tradition Field.

Manager Willie Randolph later explained that there was no deeper meaning to the lineup - other than to get Wright more at-bats - but he did say he could use Wright in that spot at some point during the season. Only Carlos Beltran (4.20) saw more pitches per at-bat than Wright (3.93) on the Mets last year, and that could give Jose Reyes more time to steal second base. Mets Spring Training Buzz

The basepaths at Osceola County Stadium yesterday had the makings of an AARP convention in the fourth inning. Moises Alou (40) was on third, Julio Franco (48) stood at second and Sandy Alomar Jr. (40) was camped comfortably at first when the unthinkable happened.

One more out, and all three could casually walk off the field. But Mike Carp -- age 20 -- showed no respect for his elders by launching a double to the wall in centerfield. Somehow, all three cruised home, Alomar bringing up the rear without a slide.

"Three old guys," Alou said. "We all scored, too. We don't look at age. We look at ourselves as players. No matter what the age is." Mets Spring Training Buzz

Too bad Clemens won't pitch there! They could have another old timer!

Shawn Green has spent the past two days working on his swing with teammates Julio Franco and Carlos Beltran. After striking out in his first two at-bats yesterday, making him 0-for-15 in spring training, Green decided he was thinking too much. In his next at-bat, he grounded a single to right for his first hit of 2007.

"I don't care; any time you're 0-for-whatever, it always feels good. Even if it's spring training," said Green, who went 2-for-5 as the designated hitter.

wow .. not good to be stressing this early in the season!

He is suppose to be working on his stroke ... not freaking out about 0-15 ...

I guess now is the best time to be in a slump ...
