Haake Homers Twice but RailCats Come Up Short in Winnipeg

Steve Haake hit his first two home runs of the season but that was all the offense for the Gary SouthShore RailCats as the Winnipeg Goldeyes pulled out a 5-2 win in front of 5,986 fans Tuesday night at Canwest Park.

Haake's solo shots came off Winnipeg starter Bear Bay (2-0) and were the 24th and 25th of his five-year RailCats career, the second most in team history. Haake tied the game in the fourth inning when he launched a 2-2 pitch from Bay over the wall in right, and he touched Bay again with two outs in the sixth to nearly the identical spot.

The rest of the RailCats, however, mustered only four hits off Bay who won for the second time this season. The right-hander struck out five in six innings of work and was followed by a trio of Goldeyes relievers who allowed just one baserunner over the last three innings, including Matt Davis who worked the ninth for his third save.

Winnipeg also hit two solo home runs in the game, one from Cody Ehlers in the third and another from Josh Asanovich in a two-run fifth. RailCats starter Onan Masao ka (0-2) lasted five innings but surrendered both longballs and four total runs, taking the loss.

The RailCats had seven hits in the game, including two from Jordan Czarniecki, who now has three in the last two games since starting season with just one hit in his first 26 at bats. Mike Massaro extended his hitting streak to nine games with a triple in the third.

The RailCats (6-6) and Goldeyes (7-3) wind down their three-game series Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Canwest Park, with Tony Cogan (1-1, 1.69 ERA) getting the start against Winnipeg right-hander Ben Pfinsgraff (1-1, 6.10). That game, like every RailCats game, will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at Official Site of the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Notes: Kyle Heyne replaced Masaoka in the sixth and pitched 2.1 innings of nearly perfect relief, striking out two and allowing only one baserunner - on an error - while throwing just 22 pitches ... Alain Quijano made his RailCats debut in the ninth and gave up three straight singles including a run-scoring hit from Ehlers ... Haake's two home runs were just the third and fourth hit by the RailCats this year. The previous two were both hit in the sixth inning May 20 at Joliet ... Haake also had a two homer game last year, June 15 at Schaumburg.
