Drillers Rally In Ninth For Win

The second meeting in a three-game series between the Tulsa Drillers and the San Antonio Missions Monday night had the feel of a basketball match up. The game featured several ties and five lead changes. It was Tulsa that struck last, scoring in the ninth inning to claim an 8-7 win.

The Drillers out hit the Missions 17-11 and they needed all of them to overcome a three-hit, two-homer game from San Antonio first baseman Mike Baxter.

With the scored tied at 7-7, Tulsa's last-inning rally began with a leadoff double off the bat of Jeff Kindel. After Darin Holcomb failed to execute a sacrifice bunt, Daniel Carte drew a one-out walk to put runners at first and second. With both runners moving, Daniel Mayora followed with a double off the right field wall that brought Kindel home with the tie-breaking run. The lead was almost two runs, but Carte was thrown out at the plate attempting to score.

The Drillers had to survive another attempted rally by the Missions in the bottom of the ninth. A pair of singles put runners at first and second with two out, but Tulsa closer Andrew Johnston got a foul pop off the bat of Mitch Canham that third baseman Holcomb caught by reaching over the dugout railing to end the game.

Kindel paced the Drillers big offensive night with four hits, while Mayora finished 3-4.

The Missions took a quick 2-0 lead in the game on a two-run homer by Baxter in the bottom of the first.

The Drillers took the lead with a three-run third inning. The rally started when Mayora drew a leadoff walk, and Cole Garner followed with a triple. Starting pitcher Chaz Roe, who had two hits in the game, helped his own cause with a run-scoring single that tied the score at 2-2. After a wild pitch and a fly out moved Roe to third, he scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Nelson.

Tulsa added to its lead with a two-out rally in the fourth as Carte singled and scored on a double by Mayora.

San Antonio took the lead back with a four-run fifth inning as Baxter struck again. After Cedric Hunter singled home a run, Baxter followed with his second homer of the game, a three-run shot over the wall in right-center field.

The Drillers cut the Missions lead to 6-5 in the sixth thanks to three singles by Mayora, Michael Paulk and Anthony Jackson.

They tied the game in the top of the seventh when Kindel doubled and scored on a base hit by Carte.

San Antonio wasted little time in retaking the lead as Eric Sogard led off the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of the year.

The Drillers responded again when pinch-hitter Ryan Harvey hit his second homer of the season with one out in the top of the eighth to tie the game and set the stage for their ninth-inning heroics.

Tulsa and San Antonio will play the final game of their three-game series Tuesday morning at 11:05AM at Wolfe Stadium. Jhoulys Chacin (0-1, 1.59 ERA) will make his second start of the season for the Drillers, while Stephen Faris (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the mound for the Missions.
