Barons Take Four of Five From Chattanooga with 8-2 Win

The Birmingham Barons bashed 14 hits Monday night at Regions Park and defeated the Lookouts for the fourth time in five nights, 8-2.

The Barons came into the game with a 3-1 record -- despite batting with the lead in only three of a possible 38 innings during the first four games -- and jumped ahead for good when CJ Retherford's second-inning double plated David Cook.

The home team added another run the next inning before breaking the game open with a three-run fourth inning that was sparked by the top four hitters in the White Sox farm system. Gordon Beckham reached base when he was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on Tyler Flowers' walk. A Brandon Allen single plated Beckham before Dayan Viciedo singled to score Flowers. Allen came across to score a few moments later on a wild pitch from Lookouts starting pitcher James Adkins.

Allen finished the night with his second four-hit game of the series.

Beckham added a two-run blast in the eighth inning that just hooked inside the left-field pole for his first home run of the season.

John Ely (1-0, 0.00) earned the win with a solid Birmingham debut. The 2007 third-round draft pick from Homewood, Illinois shutout the Lookouts through five innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out five and walked four.

John Lujan relieved Ely and allowed two runs in the sixth inning, breaking the bullpen's streak of 20-straight innings without allowing an earned run.

Adkins (0-1, 11.57) lasted just 4.2 innings for the Lookouts. The lefty gave up six runs on 11 hits.

Robbie Hudson added his first home run of the year, a solo blast in the fifth inning.

The Barons are off Tuesday before traveling to Knoxville Wednesday for the start of a five-game series against the Ryne Sandberg managed Tennessee Smokies. Right-hander Brian Omogrosso (0-0, 5.40) will make his second start for Birmingham opposite left-hander James Russell (0-1, 5.79). First pitch Wednesday is set for 6:15 PM CDT. All Barons games can be heard on 101.1 FM WYDE.
