Willie Randolph hired as Brewers bench coach

Brewers tab Randolph as bench coach | brewers.com: News

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers were looking for experience -- preferably National League experience -- in their search for a bench coach. They found it in one of their managerial candidates.

Former Mets manager Willie Randolph, one of three finalists for the managerial vacancy eventually filled by Ken Macha on Oct. 30, was named Macha's bench coach on Saturday. The news of Randolph's hiring came a day after Bill Castro was elevated to pitching coach, and it left the bullpen coach as Milwaukee's only vacancy.

Randolph said he spoke with Macha, a former teammate in the Pirates' Minor League chain, the morning after the Brewers made their managerial choice to offer congratulations. Four hours later, Macha called with the bench-coach offer.

That is great news. His past few seasons he hasn't done well as a head coach, but as a bench coach he might find himself. Also, he is going to be working directly with Rickie Weeks.

Even though you say he hasn't done well as a head coach, he had to have earned that job somehow, and to get a head coach caliber coach on the bench? That's a bargain.

Willie couldn't wait to get back in the thick of things huh? Call me lazy, but I would have sat on my butt one more year and cash in my millions. I wish him luck, and hopefully he learned from the mistakes he made as a Met, when the kids turned him out. At least he won't be the skipper, so he can play the background and improve for another opportunity as a manager in the future.
