Wholeness may equal success for Brewers

Not to place further stress on Mr. Baseball, but the Milwaukee Brewers have become the Ann E. Ladd of the major leagues. They are lurking, hanging about swimming pools and elevators around the league, refusing to go away.

It is unlikely that Bud Selig, of all people, will issue a restraining order on behalf of the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers or any other wild-card aspirant that deems the Brewers a general nuisance as the all-star break nears. It is at this ceremonial halfway point that the Brewers actually find themselves in playoff contention despite their 42-43 record, a shadowing annoyance for the usual suspects.

And while some will try to trade for pitching as a means of separation, the Brewers could very well find it from within. If Ben Sheets, who had another encouraging side session Tuesday, and Tomo Okha return, that is the kind of starting pitching you could not buy with all the hot dog bobbleheads in town. So if the offense continues at the pace that slapped around a very good Bronson Arroyo with a Fourth of July five-spot and their health remains intact, the Brewers just might have a chance.
