Is a closer controversy brewing in South Florida? For the second time in eight days,
Leo Nunez was inserted into a Marlins game to finish what
Matt Lindstrom couldn't.
Lindstrom entered with a three-run lead in the ninth Saturday only to give up a one-out double and walk to load the bases. Manager Fredi Gonzalez lifted Lindstrom for Nunez, who lost an eight-pitch battle with
Aaron Rowand, giving up a two-run single, before striking out
Edgar Renteria for his second save in a 5-4 win over the Giants. A similar situation occurred on May 30 at Citi Field, where Lindstrom inherited a four-run lead but had to be replaced by Nunez Nunez.
Asked after the game if Lindstrom would get the next opportunity to close, Gonzalez told
a Sun-Sentinel blog: "At 11:08 right now, we'll give that opportunity to Matty. Right now at 11:08. He just needs to get comfortable. We've seen him I think [go] eight out of eight [save chances]. He needs to go out and get comfortable and keep running him into those situations."
Since allowing seven runs in an April 24 blown save against the Phillies, Lindstrom has in fact gone 8 for 8 in save chances. But he also started and failed to finish the ninth in non-save situations on May 23 and 24 against Tampa in addition to the May 30 outing against the Mets.
