Betancourt to Royals

Surprised this thread hadn't already been started, so I'll start it.

Royals acquire Betancourt from Mariners for two minor-league pitchers - Kansas City Star

I think this is a good move. He's a true SS compared to Aviles or Bloomquist. Good glove. And though his numbers are down this year, has some pop in his bat. Under contract for a couple more years. Costs the Royals nothing this year. I like the trade.

I will say that I was getting more and more worried about this move. The "experts" have certainly decided this was a bad trade for the Royals. That Betancourt is a problem player who won't listen. That his skills are already dropping. And that his defense isn't very good.

Maybe it's just comparing him to what we've had at SS this year, but so far he looks good to me. We'll see how it develops over time. But the Royals flat out didn't have a SS. Playing Aviles there last year, and now Bloomquist this year, is nothing more than a stopgap. Neither is a true defensive SS. We've got nothing in the minors anywhere close. And the ones who look like they'll become free agents for next year, are WAY out of our price range.

I still think this was a good move for the Royals. And could be a great move.
