Buck has 'slight herniation' in back

Kansas City Royals' John Buck on DL, hospitalized with ailing back - ESPN

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Royals catcher John Buck is still in the hospital a day after he injured his lower back while preparing to bat against the Chicago White Sox.

Buck was placed on the 15-day disabled list and catcher Brayan Pena was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take his roster spot for the Royals' game against the White Sox on Sunday.

Manager Trey Hillman says he has no indication how long Buck might remain in the hospital or whether the "slight herniation in his lower back" might require surgery.

Buck was due to lead off the bottom of the third inning when the problem appeared to flare up. He descended the dugout steps with assistance and in obvious discomfort.

He was hitting .226 with three home runs and 19 RBIs while sharing time behind the plate with Miguel Olivo.

Ouch! Back problems suck. I do 45 minutes of stretching every morning just to combat my own back issues.

Gives us a chance to see Brayan Pena. I hope he gets a little time behind the plate while Buck's out.

Buck should be back soon. Kind of like what I've seen out of B Pena. And Olivo has been hitting well. Will be interesting to see what they do.
