Aviles may lose job

Quote:
Mike Aviles inability to snap free from a season-long slump may force the Royals to bench their starting shortstop, the Kansas City Star reported.

Aviles found himself on the bench for the third time in eight games Sunday when manager Trey Hillman put light-hitting Luis Hernandez at shortstop. Hillman then acknowledged it was a choice between Hernandez and Willie Bloomquist.

"I thought it was a good opportunity going into (Monday's) off day," Hillman said, "to give Mike a little more rest and, hopefully, clear his mind and allow him to relax a little bit."

Aviles is batting just .202 with one homer and eight RBIs in 28 games. He also has 21 strikeouts in 99 at-bats and a paltry .223 on-base percentage.

Aviles emerged last season as the club's player of the year by batting .325 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs in 102 games.

"The thing I have been encouraged by with Mike," Hillman said, "is his balance at the plate more so than in the first couple of weeks. You hope that carries into production. Some days it has. Unfortunately, several days it hasn't."

You trying to win games, I don't blame the Royals.

Just have Zack Grienke pitch every other day, I mean I haven't seen such a dominate pitcher like Grienke is in awhile. Shutting every team he faces out. That was defintely a tough loss on Saturday against Saunders. 1-0 the final score. I do see a easy win against Baltimore which is Grienke's next start.

Aviles was a great story last year. But he wasn't going to hit .325 again this year. He wasn't as good as his numbers last year. And he's not likely as bad as his numbers this year. But he's also a mediocre defensive SS. You can't play him every day if he can't hit. The clock is ticking on Aviles right now.

I don't think he worked as hard this offseason since he knew he was guaranteed a job to start the season.

Guru you may be right, but he doesn't strike me like a kid that would take his position for granted.

KCStar reported that Aviles went to the Royals and told them he has a sore arm. He's day to day. Hillman thinks that it's changed his swing and his balance at the plate. Never know quite what to believe with what a team releases about injuries. They're often less than completely honest. I'd give him a week off, and play Bloomquist. He's certainly earned playing time.
