GM's job is far from complete

GM's job is far from complete

Ed Wade keeps crossing off the items on his to-do list, one after another.

New center fielder and leadoff hitter, to undo some of the collateral damage from the Jason Jennings trade orchestrated by another Astros regime that shall remain nameless? Check. New second baseman and No. 2 hitter? Check. New cast of suspects to restock the beleaguered bullpen? Check. New people in charge of the scouting operation, at home and abroad? Check.

If the Astros' offseason done list doesn't match yours, don't despair. Wade has been on the job as Astros general manager only 10 weeks. Starting pitching, after all, seems to grow only on money trees these days. The quality of the crop tends to be about as suspect as the drinking water in the Third World.

Two bits of info from ESPN on our Astros

• Houston and Colorado have discussed a deal that would send second baseman Chris Burke to the Rockies, but the two teams don't appear to be a good match. The Astros would like to add a closer, but they are not interested in paying Brian Fuentes more than $6 million next season. They would rather just plug Chad Qualls into the closer role and try to add a set-up man.

• Contrary to speculation, the Astros have little to no interest in free-agent pitcher Jon Lieber, a club official said. Houston needs to upgrade behind staff ace Roy Oswalt, but the Astros already owe Woody Williams $6.5 million for 2008. Houston is inclined to give young pitchers Troy Patton and Matt Albers a shot at the back end of the rotation.

I really dont see a starter out thare that the Astros have a shot at getting that would really make a big change to this club. The young arms need to step it up and show that they are wouth keeping.

You are right -- they need to. But will they? It's scary.
