Oswalt solid, but Astros fall short
Right-hander yields three runs on six hits in seven innings
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros extended their losing streak to seven when they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
Playing before 40,530 fans, the Astros' results, minus Roy Oswalt's, could be described as lackluster. Beyond Carlos Lee's RBI single in the first, the Astros offered no help to their ace right-hander.

They produced at least one baserunner in each of the first five innings but much like their series in Pittsburgh, were unable to make anything happen.

Oswalt didn't have his typical control but managed to hold the Brewers scoreless through six, despite walking three batters. But he labored through a 30-pitch seventh inning, which ultimately set up the loss.

Oswalt yielded a leadoff hit to Geoff Jenkins and a double to Gabe Gross before striking out Craig Counsell during a seven-pitch at-bat. Tony Gwynn Jr., hitting for Capuano, drew a walk to load the bases, and after Rickie Weeks grounded out to drive in Jenkins, J.J. Hardy put the final nail in the coffin, dropping a double just inside the line in shallow left to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.

Lance Berkman, now batting .237 on the year, didn't help the Astros' offensive effort. He singled to shallow right-center in the third, but Gross, noticing Berkman had taken a somewhat healthy turn, fired the ball to first. Capuano tagged Berkman as he attempted to scamper back.

Berkman grounded to second in the fifth and may have been safe had he not jogged down the baseline, but instead, Weeks recovered from his mishandling of the ball and threw to first in plenty of time.

Following Friday night's game, prospect Hunter Pence was called up, and he will start in center on Saturday. Chris Burke will assume a utility role, and Stephen Randolph was designated for assignment.

I wonder when Berkman is going to get out of this slump? It has to be making him feel awful. I feel bad for him.

Oh no, it isn't becasue Capuano was stellar. It's becasue the stinking Astros aren't hitting for nothing or no one. Not even Roy. Now he knows how Roger felt. And now we know Roger won't be back.
