86' Astros Honored

"Nolan Ryan and Mike Scott had the Mets on their minds on Friday night, when the Astros celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1986 Astros at Minute Maid Park.
"I think about the series with the Mets," Ryan said. "But I also think about the team that was assembled there. We not only had a winning ballclub, but we developed special relationships with our teammates."

One of Ryan's teammates was Scott, who won Games 1 and 4 of the NLCS against the Mets that season. Scott would have pitched Game 7, as well, except the Astros lost a couple of heartbreakers in Games 5 and 6, both of which went extra innings.

"It was fun to watch and see someone have such a dominating year like that," Ryan said of Scott. "That's what we needed from this ballclub. He was our stopper. He was our guy when we needed a big win."

As dominating as Scott was that season, the disappointment of losing while on the brink of the World Series still lingers.

"I think the farther you go and not win is more disappointing," Scott said. "Like last year, [the Astros] got to the World Series, which was great. But I'm sure they were the most disappointed team in baseball.

"It's more of a heartbreaker to go that far and lose. If you don't pitch in the playoffs, you say, 'OK, we're not there. It's not a big deal.'"

Ryan agreed.

"I always tell people that if you end your season on a loss, you're disappointed, no matter what level you went to. But about a month ago, I was talking to Larry Dierker. And Larry said that he thought the second half of the season that the Mets club had was one of the best second halves ever."

Well, how about a rematch? The series did, after all, go down to the wire with that 16-inning loss in Game 6 at Shea Stadium.

"I'm ready to put my uniform on right now," Glenn Davis said. "[Sixteen innings], that was a very emotional game."

Former Astros broadcaster Gene Elston, who parted with the Astros after the 1986 season, took part in the celebration Friday, as well. He was the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award this year and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame."
