2014 Yankee prediction
So barring any further meaningful changes (I know they would like some), I predict that the Yankees will be a last place team in 2014.
Here is why;
1 - Pitching (or lack thereof). They have essentially the same starting staff, but a year older (not good for Sabbathia nor Kuroda) and without Pettite. The also no longer have Mariano nor Boone Logan in the bullpen. Net result so far, pitching will not even be as good as last year.
2 - Loss of Cano, gain of Ellsbury. OK, I know everyone feels that Ellsbury will make up for Cano but fact is, they have nobody strong at all at second base now. By putting Ellsbury in center, yes they gain over Gardner out there, but by how much really?
3 - No viable major league starting third baseman.
4 - Jeter and Teixeira both a year older coming off injury seasons. Who knows what they have at either postion.
5 - Beltran an upgrade? Maybe, maybe not. Yes he has been good but not the last time he played in NY.
The only REAL upgrade in my opinion is in the catcher spot where they finally have a major league catcher in McCann. Everywhere else, it's either a downgrade, business as usual, or a SLIGHT improvement. Fact is, they went into the off season knowing they needed to replace Pettite, resign Kuroda, replace Rivera, get a third baseman, get a catcher and replace Cano. All they have REALLY done so far is get themselves a catcher and resign Kuroda. They turned down Brandon Phillips, let Infante slip away and still pretty much have the same concerns that they had when they ended the season. Instead of really addressing their infield and pitching needs, they rebooted the outfield, which was ok as it already was.
What the Yankees absolutely need to do is sign Tanaka and Balfour, and trade Gardner for SOMETHING...he is the only one worth anything on the trade market and they just do NOT need him at this point. Then take care of second and third.
