Why Tim Raines is the true stolen base king, and not Rickey Henderson

Quote:
Rickey Henderson. He's been praised as the greatest player of all time, and the king of stealing bases. With 1406 stolen bases in 25-years, he's landed himself in the Hall-of-Fame. However, have you ever stopped and thought there could possibly be someone far better then him? It's unlikely you have, but there is one man who's been living in the shadow's of Henderson's domination.

His name? Tim Raines.

Raines, who played a 23-year career with six different teams, remains just a 7-time All-Star and off the Hall of Fame list, but his numbers say other wise. Putting up a lifetime average of .294 (beating out Henderson's by a good 20 points), and..

Herderson is the greatest base-stealer ever, but Raines is overlooked.

Eh.. I agree with the fact that he's overlooked, because he surely is.. but when you think about it, Henderson went alllll the time.. like all the time, if he got thrown out stealing second with his team tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, he'd steal again in the bottom of the 11th. Does that really count as the "greatest" of all-time, or is it just somebody who is pushing there way to the record?

Because his stolen base percentage is better doesn't mean he's the greatest. Henderson has over 500 more stolen bases. That more than makes up for the percentage that he got thrown out.

I see where you're coming from, but don't you think the true definition of the base stealing key is somebody who can steal bases with a baseball mind set. Henderson's ego and how much he strived for the goal would run his team into a viable out in some situations.. imo, that's somebody trying to get the most stolen bases independently. Raines, on the other hand, managed 808 stolen bases while be a very very helpful base stealer without running his team into outs.

It's the same thing as home runs. If someone averaged a home run every 8 at-bats would he be the home run king if he had 500 home runs compared to Bonds' 762 because he hit a home run more often? No. He wouldn't. Henderson was the GOAT for stealing bases.

That's a good argument, but I don't think it applies to base stealing. It's quality of quantity, just like the saying goes. Wouldn't you rather have a guy, like Raines, who steals fewer bags a season but they're more quality steals (i.e. not thrown out in keen situations) then a quantity guy like Henderson?

Are you saying that because Henderson is one of the most famous baseball players, and you'd be honored to coach him and have him on your team?

I guess I should ask, who would be more beneficial to your team?

I am saying that because no one has stolen more bases than him, and he is the greatest base stealer ever. I don't care about percents. When you look up who has the most stolen bases of all time. It's not Raines name at the top. It's Hernderson. Plus with the stick? Herderson > Raines.
