Former World Series MVP Hideki Matsui Calls it Quits

Quote:
Formerly know as 'Godzilla', Hideki Matsui recieved the honor of the World Series MVP during the Yankees 2009 run. With the accomplishment Matsui achieved, he leveled himself with the Japanese star who terrorized the city of New York. After dominating both sides of the Pacific with his slugging bat, Matsui has announced retirement.

Matsui is considered to be one of the best Major League players to come from Japan, right behind Ichiro Suzuki. One thing Matsui could hold as his own is his power, giving way for him to be forever sketched as the ultimate Japanese slugger.

It's hard to believe that Matsui only shared his time in the Big Leagues for 10-years, but that's credited to the fact that he joined just before his 30's, at 29-years old.

It's similar to Ichiro, who has surprisingly only played 12 years in the MLB, joining just two seasons before Matsui, at age 28. With Ichiro's age as a factor, the 39-year old is coming closer to a similar fate as Matsui.

Matsui will finish his Major League career with 175 home runs, 1253 hits ... all in just a mere 10 seasons. His iconic stats come from the memorable years of playing with the Yomiuri Giants in the Japanese League, where Matsui crushed 332 home runs, in also just 10 years.

Looking back, it didn't take Matsui long to get a hang of what MLB had to offer. In 2004, just one year after his rookie debut, Matsui put up the best stats of his career by driving in over 100 runs and smacking 31 home runs. He also put up a remarkable .390 OBP, while maintaining a consistent .298 average. Matsui would receive his second, and final, All-Star appearance. But it didn't stop there. In 2005, Matsui was back at it again. After batting a career high average of .305, Matsui set a whopping career high 116 RBI's, and hit a monster 23 home runs -- All while not missing one game.

I agree, he also stuck around two seasons too long.

No, he hit .282 in 4442 MLB Career ABs. No way is he getting in.

Too bad he had to wait such a long time before entering the Bigs.. if he just joined when he was younger he'd have his face in the hall of fame.
