Rockies Thumb cuticle cut forces Ubaldo to 15-day DL

Quote:
Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez has been sent to the 15-day disabled list as he continues to recover from a cuticle cut on his right thumb.

Jimenez's placement on the DL is retroactive to April 2, making the right-hander eligible to return on April 17.

"We're trying to take care of it right now, trying to make it 100 percent ready," Jimenez said. "I don't want to be 50 percent or 70 percent, [because] then by the time I get to the mound and start throwing again, [the injury] is going to come back."
To start in place of Jimenez, who struggled in his Opening Day outing against the D-backs due in part to the injury, the Rockies recalled right-hander Greg Reynolds from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Reynolds, the second overall pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Stanford, will start on Saturday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Rockies manager Jim Tracy said Jimenez's thumb is doing "extremely well," but the club doesn't want to rush him back from the injury, which is similar to the one that forced him to miss a start during Spring Training.

"We are in a position, by doing what we're doing, to control it and not run the risk of re-tearing it," Tracy said. "I want [the injury] behind us, and the only way we're going to get it completely behind us is if we stop right now and completely allow the finger the opportunity to become a non-issue."

Jimenez said discomfort caused by the cut cuticle forced him to guide the ball in his first start of the year. While Jimenez said his arm is pain-free, he knows that continuing to throw the ball in such a fashion could leave him with a bigger issue to deal with than his cuticle.

"If I'm trying to find a different grip on the ball or do different things, I'm probably going to end up hurting my arm," Jimenez said.

Jimenez was 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 2010, both Rockies single-season records, but he gave up six runs (five earned) in six innings in the Rockies' Opening Day loss to the D-backs.

Tracy expressed confidence in Reynolds -- who is 2-8 with a 8.13 ERA in 14 career games (all in 2008) but pitched well during Spring Training as he battled for the fifth-starter job eventually won by Esmil Rogers.

"He's earned the opportunity, in my opinion, because of what I saw in Spring Training," Tracy said. "He has built up to being equipped to be able to pitch six to seven innings, depending on how things are going, which plays right into our bullpen."

The trip to the DL is the first of Jimenez's Major League career. The Rockies' ace played light catch on Wednesday and said he hopes to throw a bullpen session in the next couple of days.

"It is kind of hard, but I know [the Rockies] are trying to do everything good for me," Jimenez said. "I want to be 100 percent, and I want to be out there for my team."

I didn't hear much about the Rockies pre-season, but they haven't gotten off to a bad start at all.

There a great and fun team to watch. Great defense, great offense, and there pitching is looking extremely solid. You should see Cargo man that guy has a cannon.

And a great nickname in a time where there aren't many great nicknames anymore! But as I was posting to MS I have a hard time following teams out West. I'm O.K. until out to the St. Louis area and then I kind of fall off!
