The Indians have maintained that they have interest in locking up shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to an extension. Cleveland is now on the verge of completing such a deal as Spring Training winds to a close.
According to a source, the Indians reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with Cabrera on Sunday that will pay him $16.5 million over the 2013-14 seasons. Cleveland has not officially announced the signing, and general manager Chris Antonetti declined comment.
The Indians pursued a multiyear contract with Cabrera over the offseason, but ultimately settled on a one-year deal worth $4.55 million to avoid arbitration. The extension covers the shortstop's final year of arbitration and his first free-agent year, keeping him off the open market for at least one more season.
