Chapman lands on DL with shoulder issues
Quote:
Perhaps the Reds found an explanation for Aroldis Chapman's recent wildness. The lefty reliever was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with shoulder inflammation.
Right-handed reliever Jordan Smith was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to replace Chapman.
The 23-year-old Chapman has 20 walks and 15 strikeouts over 13 innings, and has posted a 6.92 ERA over 16 appearances. During Sunday's 9-7 win over the Cardinals, he was handed a 9-2 lead in the top of the ninth and proceeded to walk four of the five batters he faced, leading to a five-run rally."We just have to figure out what's wrong with Chapman," Reds manager Dusty Baker said after the game.
Of the 23 pitches Chapman threw on Sunday, only five were strikes. He did not retire a batter in his previous two outings and has been charged with nine earned runs and 12 walks over his last four appearances.
Chapman has been one of the more electric pitchers to hit the big league scene in recent years. Known for his velocity, he routinely reaches 100 mph and achieved a record last September with a 105.1 mph pitch at San Diego.
This season, however, Chapman's velocity has been more inconsistent with regular use. Baker has had trouble using him on consecutive days and must pick his spots to get him into a game. Chapman's slide came after the best outing of his career -- a 1 2/3 scoreless-inning performance with two strikeouts during a win at Milwaukee.

I wonder how they will use Chapman in 2012. With his shoulder issues I don't think he is a good candidate for a starter, but as a closer he could be nasty.

Everytime I hear about Chapman all you hear about is how they want to make him a closer. With Codero gone, I think next seaso n will be his year.

He is going to be awesome. I just hope he can stay healthy.
