Reds Votto Looks to Challenge Pujols' Superiority

Quote:
By Steve Gardner, USA TODAY

More than any other position, first base is about power. Of the 18 players in the majors who hit 30 or more home runs last season, half of them were first basemen -- including five of the top six.

Starting with the consensus No. 1 overall pick -- the Cardinals' Albert Pujols -- the top-tier first basemen are all likely to be snapped up extremely early. If you don't get one of those, you'll likely have to pay a premium to get your power elsewhere.

Pujols continues to put up amazingly consistent numbers -- and even though his .312 average, 42 homers, 115 runs scored and 118 RBI didn't make him fantasy's top-rated player (he was second to outfielder Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies), he's the closest thing to a sure bet to be right up there again this season.

Cincinnati's Joey Votto is a rising star who should contend for the Triple Crown again this season. And, like Pujols, he can give you double-digit steals for good measure. But after those two -- plus Ryan Howard of the Phillies and Prince Fielder of the Brewers -- the NL first base crop can get thin pretty quickly.

Potential sleeper: Of course, "thin" is a relative term when it comes to first basemen. There are plenty of them who can put up decent numbers, the Mets' Ike Davis for example. Thrust into a starting role as a rookie, Davis hit .264 with 19 homers and 71 RBI. With better health an almost certainty, the Mets should be better offensively this season. Davis has room to improve as well.

Potential bust: Everything went perfectly last season for Aubrey Huff. He hooked up with the Giants, rediscovered his power stroke, led the team in homers, helped them win a World Series and was rewarded with a new two-year contract. He's going to be expected to deliver another .290, 26, 86 season and at age 34, that could be tough to do.

1 Albert Pujols StL
2 Joey Votto Cin
3 Prince Fielder Mil
4 Ryan Howard Phi
5 Buster Posey-C SF
6 Carlos Lee-OF Hou
7 Carlos Pena ChC
8 Lance Berkman STL
9 Aubrey Huff-OF SF
10 Gaby Sanchez Fla
11 Ike Davis NYM

As you know I have been working on doing things properly for Twitter so if a real new item comes out while I'm on here I can handle it. But the more I started looking a this post I thought it was right for Twitter, but maybe actually in the wrong place? Because the URL was Fantasy! Feel free to move it, if you think it shouldn't be here.

I don't either! But the story starts out like a more serious story and then the writer goes to the fantasy angle on the story.

I have no problem taking Cabrera over Votto in the first round.
