Reds fall to Yankees in righty's final Grapefruit League start

YANKEES 6, REDS 3
at Sarasota, Fla.
Tuesday, March 31
Yankees at the plate: Melky Cabrera's fourth-inning double and sixth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for three runs. Starting center fielder Brett Gardner had three hits, but he got doubled off in the first inning and was thrown out trying to steal second base in the third.

Reds at the plate: Jay Bruce had a pair of hits and drove in a run in the Reds' two-run sixth. Ramon Hernandez drove in the other run in that frame with a single of his own. Joey Votto delivered a run in the seventh with an RBI double.

Yankees on the mound: Joba Chamberlain made his final start of the spring and put up zeroes through five innings. He ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a pair of runs before yielding to Brian Bruney, who got out of the jam. Chamberlain gave up five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings while striking out six.

Reds on the mound: In his final audition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, Micah Owings had an up-and-down outing. An error by Bruce with two outs in the fourth opened the floodgates for three unearned runs to score. Owings pitched into the sixth, but he left the bases loaded with none out and was charged with allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out five. Nick Masset did a nice job coming into that bases-loaded, no-out situation, giving up a sacrifice fly, then inducing an inning-ending double play. His seventh didn't go as well, as he allowed two more runs, one of them earned, but he ended the frame by getting a groundout and two strikeouts.
