Peavy starts rebuilding arm strength

Jake Peavy had an approximately 30-pitch session off the mound on Sunday, throwing part of the time out of the stretch, with manager Ozzie Guillen and pitching coach Don Cooper watching. It was termed as just a light effort to regain the touch and feel of his pitches missing since he last worked in a game on March 19 against the A's.

Peavy then said afterward that he will be staying in Arizona as part of extended spring training, before rejoining the White Sox in Chicago for the home opener on April 7.

"I know Coop wants me with the team, working with him," Peavy said. "But through this first week, with all the day games and weather being so nice here, it doesn't make much sense to be with the team just yet."I'm going to stay here for a week or so and maybe get some side sessions in a game or two, simulated or whatever it may be, before I get back out with the team. Obviously I will leave the team and do a few rehab stints before I'll be back with the team. I'm doing what I'm told in this situation.

"And I'll gladly be with the team and pull for the boys and be one of the guys on the bench and get my work in off the field," Peavy said. "When it's time to start, I'll start where they send me."

Cooper mentioned that Peavy is currently being viewed as missing a start due to the rotator cuff tendinitis stalling his comeback from experimental surgery on July 14 to reattach the tendon that anchors the latissimus dorsi muscle to the rear of Peavy's shoulder. Peavy felt good on Sunday but probably won't be pitching with the White Sox until the end of April as he starts over in building his pitch count toward 100.
