20's-30's pitching?

I started thinking and was wondering, Were pitchers back in the olden days throwing as fast as pitchers modern time? And if not, what range difference would you give someone like me who is curious?

Yes i know, they didn't have radars back then.

Funny you should mention this. A few weeks ago we were talking about this. There is a few youtube videos floating around of bob Feller and how they were clocking him to see how fast he could throw. The talent of pitching was not as good as it is today, but there was still A LOT of dominate pitching. Guys like Christy Masterson and Walter Johnson, could all throw up to 100 MPH.

That's just insanity. I was thinking anywhere from high 80's to low 90's but 98?? Thats just crazy. If i could just hit high 80's lolol! That is a pretty cool video though. Who would have thought that a motorcycle would have been used to test which was faster??

I think Indian motorcycles are some of the best around. I know the old ones are really, really valuable from watching American Pickers.

LOL! They used motorcyles to judge the speed of a pitch?!?!?! AWESOME!

So do you play in any type of league or is this just a hobby for you?

I am just an avid baseball fan with hope and aspirations of becoming a sports writer.

Baseball is my passion, a hobby and something I hope to make a living out of. I wasn't graced with the most natural playing abilities. The only real highlights I have of playing baseball, is playing with friends on the diamond.

I think you speak for the majority of us when you say "natural abilities" including me. Glad to hear that somebody wants to do something in their life that they love to do for a change and not just for money. I wish you the best of luck in the near future my friend!
