Brandon Webb is coming back to Arizona. The Diamondbacks announced today that they exercised the $8.5 million club option on the right-hander and 2006 NL Cy Young winner, who missed almost the entire season while recovering from a shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery on August 4.
"Since Brandon has recovered well from his surgery, we have decided to exercise his option," general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement. "His accomplishments for our organization have been significant. We look forward to him returning to the mound."
Webb will turn 31 next May. The Diamondbacks had a buyout option of $2 million.
Webb started Opening Day for the D-backs, giving up six runs in four innings against the Rockies in a no-decision. He went on the disabled list shortly thereafter and did not return. In 2008, he went 22-7 with a 3.30 ERA and finished second in the Cy Young voting after leading the NL in wins, starts and finishing in the top 10 in ERA (10th) and innings pitched (fourth).
