Webb to make Opening Day Start
No surprises as D-backs set rotation
Webb will make fourth consecutive Opening Day start
TEMPE, Ariz. -- It was not a surprise, but D-backs manager Bob Melvin made the order of his regular-season pitching rotation official on Friday.
Brandon Webb will start on Opening Day for the fourth straight year and be followed by Dan Haren, Doug Davis and Jon Garland.
Because of off-days, the D-backs will not need fifth starter Max Scherzer until April 14. Melvin said it had not been determined yet whether Scherzer will start the year with the big league team in the bullpen or get a start in the Minor Leagues.
As for how he decided to throw Davis ahead of Garland, Melvin said there was little distinction.
"Both of those guys are No. 3 for me," he said.
Melvin also decided against splitting up Webb and Haren at the top of the rotation.
"I'd like to get my best two starters out there as often as I can," he said.
