Twins Twins' early flurry backs Diamond to first win

Quote:
For one inning Wednesday afternoon, the Twins didn't look like a team that is suffering through its toughest month of August since moving to Minnesota 50 years ago.

Scott Diamond picked up his first career Major League victory as the Twins erupted for six runs in the first inning, then held on to beat the White Sox, 7-6, at U.S. Cellular Field. The win snapped a five-game losing streak against Chicago for Minnesota, which finished the month with just seven wins, one less than its previous August-low of eight in 1997.

The six-hit, six-run first inning against Jake Peavy was highlighted by three consecutive one-out doubles by Trevor Plouffe, Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer and a pair of home runs -- a two-run shot by Jason Kubel and a two-run blast by Luke Hughes. Peavy (6-7) held the Twins scoreless for the rest of his five-inning outing, limiting them to just two more hits in that time, but Diamond had all he needed by that point.

In just his third career start, Diamond -- who had four strikeouts in his first two outings combined -- fanned five White Sox batters while limiting Chicago to just three runs in his six innings. The southpaw worked his way into trouble by issuing three walks, but the early six-run cushion was more than enough for him to pick up his first win in the big leagues.
