Padres Latos feels good after throwing side session

Quote:
The first two words Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley used to describe Mat Latos' brief side session on Saturday morning at Busch Stadium were "fantastic" and "great."

"His command, the movement on his two-seamer is coming back to him. And mechanically is he good and repeated his delivery," Balsley said.

Latos, on the disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder, threw 20 pitches before the second game of the regular season, all of which were fastballs.Latos will now head back to Arizona on Sunday where he'll throw between 60-70 pitches Monday in a Minor League game.

"This was his best outing by far," Balsley said. "There's no pain and he's right on target."

San Diego manager Bud Black said Latos will travel next week to San Diego -- the Padres will play their home opener on Tuesday at PETCO Park -- and will likely throw on the side or in the bullpen either Wednesday or Thursday.

Latos last pitched in a Spring Training game on March 21 and is eligible to return from the DL on April 5.

"Everything felt very good ... I haven't felt the way I threw today all spring," Latos said. "Now it's time to progress and get back to helping these guys."
