CHICAGO -- The Cubs are investigating who vandalized the statue of legendary broadcaster Harry Caray outside Wrigley Field, spraying graffiti on the base.

The graffiti said "Sox" and another, illegible word. The white spray paint has been removed, and a Cubs spokesman said Sunday the team was gathering details about the incident.

Caray's statue was moved to the corner of Waveland and Sheffield avenues to make room for a new bronze statue of Hall of Famer Billy Williams. Caray's statue was rededicated in September.

It's not the first time Caray's bronze statue has been vandalized. Chicago police removed a dead goat carcass found hanging around it in October 2007.

It hasn't been a smooth move for Caray's statue. The base was cracked when one of the vehicles used in the ballpark makeover for the college football game between Northwestern and Illinois accidentally struck the bronze. The statue was to be repaired by Opening Day.
