Sox after Padres slugger Gonzalez? Peavy all for it
Persistent White Sox general manager Ken Williams succeeded in landing Jake Peavy last July, and he has embarked on some groundwork to land another All-Star player from San Diego.
Sunday, Peavy confirmed that Williams had asked him last winter about Adrian Gonzalez, and Peavy gave Williams a ringing endorsement of the left-handed-hitting first baseman who would fortify the Sox's predominantly right-handed-hitting lineup.
"Obviously, I said we need to get this guy," Peavy said. "This guy can blink his eyes and hit 40 home runs in our park."
The price for Gonzalez, 27, could be higher than as it was for Peavy, who commanded four pitching prospects. Gonzalez won't become a free agent until after the 2011 season. He has averaged 32 home runs and 100 RBIs in his four seasons with San Diego and won two Gold Glove Awards for his defense in 2008 and 2009.
