Kipnis with the way he is playing right now could move off that bench really soon.

JPBPA has demands turned down by MLB

Looks like the WBC may proceed without Japan...

Quote:
The Japan Professional Baseball Players Association on Wednesday requested in a meeting with Major League Baseball that the Japanese team receive a bigger slice of the revenue for the next World Baseball Classic in 2013 but its demand was turned down. As part of its demands at the negotiations held in Tokyo, the JPBPA had asked that sponsorship rights and the rights to baseball memorabilia for the Japanese team be transferred to Nippon Professional Baseball. The Japanese players' union said it still plans, in coordination with NPB and the Japanese pro baseball clubs, to demand that the rights be secured as a condition for Japan to play in 2013. JPBPA executive director Toru Matsubara said, "Right now, for the future of Japan we must have a solid contract."

According to a source, MLB and the MLB Players Association, which will organize the 2013 tournament, have notified the JPBPA and NPB that the deadline to reply on whether or not Japan will participate in the tournament is the end of September. Jim Small, MLB's vice president for Asia, has said that the MLB will go ahead with the WBC, even if Japan does not play.

WBC talks to continue in U.S.

Excerpt from the Daily Yomiuri...
Quote:
Officials from Nippon Professional Baseball and representatives of Major League Baseball and its players union said they plan to meet in the United States to continue talks to resolve issues to ensure Japan participates in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Neither side had much to say to the media after a roughly two-hour meeting on Wednesday morning, the second of two straight days of discussions at the NPB commissioner's office in Tokyo. "The talks were productive--we made a small amount of progress," said Toshimasa Shimada, a top executive of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Japan's players association last month voiced displeasure with the revenue distribution from sponsors and the players have threatened to skip the next WBC if an agreement on a new system for sharing is not reached. That, however, is just one of the items on the agenda as the sides continue talks. "There are many issues we have to hash out as we move forward in these talks. At some point soon, I think we will be traveling over there [to the States]" to continue talks, Shimada said. "We haven't discussed when, but we'll determine that as quickly as possible. The sooner we reach a decision on that, the better." Shimada wouldn't go into the details of the talks, but said there are numerous issues to iron out. "We haven't really made any demands as of yet, but this is a negotiation, so this is not really the forum to discuss those details," he said.

MLB officials were just as tightlipped, offering a quick statement before exiting the office. "It was very similar to yesterday, we had some very productive discussions," said Paul Archey, MLB senior vice president for international business. "I wish there was a lot more to tell you, but there's not. I think both parties would characterize it as productive and we agreed to continue talking." Tim Slavin, director of business affairs for the MLB players association, said details of the negotiations are not for public consumption. "The discussions that occurred in the meeting room will stay in the meeting room," Slavin said. "An important point to note is that these discussions are ongoing and we intend to continue this dialogue." When asked if there was a timetable to reach an agreement, Archey shook his head as he said, "No. It's that simple." Japan won the inaugural WBC title in 2006 and followed that triumph by repeating in 2009.

MLB leading turf consultant; Murray Cook blogs about his recent visit to Europe...

Quote:
During this past week I was on a bit of a whirlwind Europe tour taking in some venue reviews, assessments, etc.. Amsterdam, Barcelona, Regensburg, Prague and London. A highlight of the tour was seeing the Olympic stadium in Canary Wharf-London. A very simple yet impressive structure with 82000 seats located. As with all the Olympic venues each has some type of tower located in and around the Olympic stadium. The “orbit” is being constructed at the Olympic Park and it has drawn mixed reviews. I think it looks pretty cool and is a mathematical miracle based on the unique design.
What does this mean for the WBCQ? The rumor mill has Regensburg, Germany as the favorite to host the European WBCQ group and Barcelona, Spain is in second place.

No agreement on NPB's demand for bigger share in 2013 WBC
Quote:
NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- Japanese baseball officials held negotiations in New York Thursday to demand a bigger slice of revenue to take part in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, but no agreement has been reached with organizers of the tournament.

Toshimasa Shimada, the head of international relations and other representatives of Japanese baseball, have requested that sponsorship rights and the rights to baseball memorabilia for the Japanese team be transferred to Nippon Professional Baseball.

The Japan Professional Baseball Players Association made the same request at meetings with Major League Baseball held in Tokyo in August, but the demands were rejected.

Despite its contribution to the 2009 tournament, MLB and the MLB Players Association each received 33 percent of the overall revenue, while Japan only got 13 percent.

WBC Miami to host 2013 WBC Finals

Excerpt from the article...
Quote:
Miami should be getting used to being the center of the baseball universe in the years to come -- and, no, I am not expecting the Boys in Teal to make a run for a third World Series championship anytime soon. The World Baseball Classic Championship game will be held in the new ballpark in 2013 and the All Star Game will be played there in 2015.

I'm not sure if this article is correct, but Miami would be a great change of pace. However no venues have been officially announced yet, but the qualifiers venues should be released this month. The WBC venues should be announced sometime in December. The WBC rumor mill is at it again and it says that the WBCQ most likely hosts are Panama and Germany; while Taiwan and Canada are supposedly not interested in hosting, but Spain and Thailand are being considered as replacements.

Miami will be an interesting area for hosting Opening day especially for the Spanish speaking teams since so many people down there speak Spanish.

Let's wait to hear what kind of excuses Marlins fans will have for not attending games at this place...
