Nationals boost 'pen, sign Soriano to two-year deal
Quote:
The Nationals made their bullpen even better on Tuesday afternoon, agreeing to sign reliever Rafael Soriano to a two-year, $28 million contract, pending a physical, according to baseball sources.
The deal also includes a $14 million option for 2015 that vests if Soriano finishes 120 games over the next two years. The Nats have not confirmed the signing.
Soriano declined the Yankees' requisite $13.3 million qualifying offer, so the Nationals forfeit what is currently the 29th overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, and the Yanks receive what is currently the 32nd overall pick. The Draft order is still subject to change depending on free agents Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn signing with other teams.
Soriano, 33, had one of his best seasons in 2012, posting a 2.26 ERA with 42 saves for the Yankees, taking over the closer duties after Mariano Rivera's injury. He joins a Nats bullpen that already includes Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard, who closed games in 2012.
