Washington Nationals release right-handed pitcher John Patterson
WASHINGTON (AP)—John Patterson was cut by the Washington Nationals in a surprise move Thursday, a little more than a week before the season begins.
“I thought things were going well,” the right-hander said in a telephone interview from Florida.
Patterson was Washington’s opening-day starter in 2007. But he missed much of the last two seasons because of right forearm problems, limiting him to 15 starts in 2006 and 2007 combined. He had surgery in September to repair a nerve problem.

If I'm a Nationals fan I am not too keen on hearing this news. Patterson has a ton of talent and, with a bit of luck, should be able to come close to replicating his 2005 numbers. Even his career line (4.32 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) is probably better than that which the other potential starters could offer.
As it stands now the Nats have Hill, Odalis Perez, Tim Redding, and question marks - and it could be argued that Perez and Redding are question marks in and of themselves... and, if I was really pessimistic, I could point out that Hill is an injury concern.
