[quote]The Blue Jays completed a two-year, $16 million contract with free-agent outfielder Melky Cabrera on Monday.
The 28-year-old Cabrera is coming off a controversial season with the Giants. Cabrera was one of the Major Leagues' most proficient hitters until he received a 50-game suspension for using a banned substance on Aug. 15.
"We did a lot of work on him. Obviously, with the suspension, that was something that was very important to look into," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said of Cabrera at a news conference on Tuesday morning at Rogers Centre. "[We] talked to a lot of teams he was on, front office, teammates, staff. Everyone had great things to say about him. Obviously, no one would condone what he did. Those were a lot of the questions I had, but was satisfied with the answers."
Cabrera's suspension came when he was leading the National League in batting with a .346 average. He had 11 homers and 60 RBIs in 113 games while posting a career-high .906 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). Cabrera was also named Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game in Kansas City./QUOTE]
