Burnett throws
Quote:
TORONTO -- On Friday, A.J. Burnett took a big first step towards returning to the Blue Jays starting rotation.
Prior to the Jays' series opener against the Mariners, Burnett took part in a bullpen session for the first time since being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. For the past week, Burnett had been throwing off flat ground, but this was the first time he threw from an elevated mound since the injury.
"I just talked to him real quick," said Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi. "Today, he felt good and now we'll go to the next thing."
When that next step will occur is anybody's guess, because Burnett still doesn't have a set timetable for his return. First, the Jays will have to wait and see how Burnett feels over the next couple of days. If he doesn't experience any discomfort, then it's likely he'll throw a couple more bullpen sessions and possibly take part in a simulated game. After that, he'll need to go on a Minor League rehab assignment before returning to Toronto.
