Default Tigers @ Blue Jays, April 12 - 15

Thursday, April 12 Rogers Centre | 7:07 PM ET
Mike Maroth, LHP (1-0, 7.20)
Tigers (5-3)
@ Tomo Ohka, RHP (0-0, 10.38)
Blue Jays (5-3)

Scouting Report:
Tigers: Maroth wasn't as effective as he had hoped last Saturday in his first Tigers start since last May, but he was good enough to earn a victory behind a good day for Detroit's offense. The win wasn't as important to him as getting back into a healthy routine of starting once every five days, something he'll finally have a chance to do again, starting with the series opener in Toronto. He's 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA for his career at Rogers Centre, but he hasn't pitched there since 2005. Blue Jays: In his first atrt of the season, Ohka allowed five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Devil Rays on Saturday. The right-hander walked three, struck out one and yielded two home runs in the outing. Ohka is 0-1 with an 11.12 ERA in two career games against the Tigers. He's 2-0 with a 2.74 ERA all-time at the Rogers Centre.

^ I could'nt watch the game as well. It was on rogers preview which I don't have. =/
I think Hallady pitched well according to the box score. 1 ER in 10 innings. Awesome.

Halladay gets upper-hand in duel
Ace hurls 10-inning gem to lift Blue Jays past visiting Tigers

TORONTO -- John Gibbons knew what the answer was going to be before he asked the question. Still, the Blue Jays' manager walked over to Roy Halladay after the ninth inning on Friday to see if his ace would take the hill for one more frame. "He just came up and asked if I was fine," Halladay said. "It's just a matter of being honest with Gibby with what I have left."
On this night, Halladay still had plenty in the tank after matching wits with Tigers ace Jeremy Bonderman for nine innings. The horse of Toronto's pitching staff told his manager that he'd take the ball in the 10th, and that turned out to be the decisive dagger to Detroit.
Halladay continued his dominant performance in the 10th, quickly disposing of the Tigers in order to give his offense the chance to mount a late comeback against Detroit's bullpen. The Blue Jays didn't let Halladay down, notching a run in the 10th to escape with a 2-1 win at Rogers Centre.
After Aaron Hill jogged across home plate for the game-winning run, which was made possible by a deep sacrifice fly to center field by Alex Rios, Halladay bolted from the dugout and joined a mob of Blue Jays players in celebration on the field. The pitcher wanted to soak up every second of the victory.
"It's just rare as a starter to be able to go out and congratulate your teammates like that after a game," Halladay said, smiling. "I enjoyed it. I appreciate what they do, and it's fun to be able to go out there and do that."
It's just as rare to have such a fast-paced pitchers' duel last as long as the one Halladay and Bonderman turned in Friday. For Halladay, the 10-inning performance matched the longest start of his career, which also came against the Tigers on Sept. 6, 2003.
"I've seen him do this to us twice now," Bonderman said. "That's pretty impressive to see it both times he's done it. And to be a part of one, I would've loved to have gone back out for the 10th and tried to match him."
Rios sent Bonderman's first pitch of the night over the left-field wall for a homer, but the right-hander settled into a groove after that against the Jays (6-4). Over nine innings, Bonderman gave up six hits, struck out four and walked none. He retired the final nine batters he faced.
Halladay (2-0) gave up a solo shot to right fielder Magglio Ordonez to lead off the second inning to knot the score at 1. After that, though, the former American League Cy Young Award winner cruised all the way through the 10th, giving up six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. In the process, Halladay lowered his season ERA from 3.46 to 2.35.
"Outside of one really nice swing by Ordonez, it was a complete-game shutout," Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun said. "He got a little irritated after that, and when he gets that way, he tends to get a little stingy. That was the way he was the rest of the ballgame. He was throwing every single pitch up there designed to get you out right now.
"That was a great game for the fans to watch, because they got to see two aces going at it," Zaun added. "Certainly, Bonderman at this point deserves that label because he's really pitched very well over the last few years. You saw probably as good a pitching matchup tonight as you'll see all year."
Halladay said the outing "felt like two different games." Early on, Detroit's hitters maintained a patient approach at the plate against the right-hander, but they became increasingly aggressive as the deadlocked game wore on.
Detroit's hastened approach at the plate played into Halladay's favor. His focus in every start is to induce early contact in an attempt to produce quick outs and keep his pitch count low. Halladay retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced Friday, and he induced 15 outs via ground balls during the win over the Tigers (6-4).
"I felt like later in the game they became a little more aggressive," Halladay said. "At that point, I can expand the [strike] zone a little bit more, where early on if they're taking pitches, I've really got to be a lot better of being on the plate. Sometimes that's where you get in trouble."
The Tigers didn't face much trouble until turning to their bullpen in the 10th inning. Fernando Rodney (1-2) gave up an infield single to Hill, and then misplayed a bunt down the first-base line by shortstop John McDonald.
Jays third baseman Jason Smith then loaded the bases with another bunt, which he placed down the third-base line where no fielder could glove it in time to make a play. That's when Rios followed with the sac fly to center.
"Both pitchers did a great job, but we stayed strong," Rios said. "I wasn't trying to do much. I knew that we just needed a run. So it could've come with a fly ball or something like that. I wasn't trying to put much pressure on myself."
Who knows if Rios would've faced a similar situation if Halladay hadn't gone one more inning. Even though Gibbons knew Halladay would gladly take the ball for three more outs, Toronto's manager said it's never easy to ask for as much of a team's ace.
"You don't want to leave him out there too long just because of who he is," Gibbons said. "But tonight he had it all going."
The 11th inning would've been a different story.
"There's a point where you have to be smart about it," Halladay said, laughing.
