Jays' late rally falls short vs. Tigers
Quote:
DETROIT -- The Blue Jays nearly overcame a poor outing by starter A.J. Burnett and a nine-run deficit, but they fell just short in a 10-9 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday at Comerica Park. Toronto scored seven runs in the eighth inning -- led by a three-run triple by pinch-hitter Jason Smith and a two-run double by center fielder Vernon Wells that cut Detroit's lead to one run. In the sixth, second baseman Aaron Hill began the rally with a two-run homer off Detroit starter Nate Robertson.
The comeback wasn't enough to erase the damage done by the Tigers against Burnett (0-1), though. The right-hander yielded six runs on five hits in two-plus innings. All of the runs Burnett allowed came in the third, when he wasn't able to retire an out and Detroit (1-1) scored eight runs.
The Tiger's offensive outburst in the third was capped off by Curtis Granderson, who sent an 0-1 pitch from reliever Shaun Marcum bouncing off the railing above the right-field wall for a grand slam. Marcum allowed one more run in the fourth, when Magglio Ordonez scored on a groundout by Craig Monroe to give Detroit (1-1) a 9-0 advantage.
Through the first five innings, Toronto's offense struggled against Robertson (1-0), who allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. The bats came to life for the Jays (1-1) against Detroit relievers Jason Grilli and Fernando Rodney, who combined to allow seven runs in the eighth.
