Default Sorting out the payroll

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays have started to map out their offseason plans, but there's still one detail that needs to be worked out. Toronto will be able to tackle some of its goals more realistically when it knows exactly how much payroll will be allotted for 2007.
"I think that'll be helpful," Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said on Monday. "We haven't got that yet. Hopefully, we get it within the next two weeks. I think we'll have it by the time we need to have it, as far as addressing free-agent guys."

Not only that, though, Toronto's increased payroll -- speculated to be around $90-95 million next year -- could help the club in its upcoming negotiations with Vernon Wells. The two-time Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder is scheduled to make $5.6 million next season, but that's also the last year in his current contract.
