NEW YORK -- With the final game of the season rapidly approaching, the Blue Jays are about to start prioritizing their offseason tasks. There are a number of goals on the agenda -- one being the middle infield situation, which Toronto hopes to address this winter.
Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi has made it clear that acquiring an infielder to team with Aaron Hill in order to create a new double-play combination is one of his goals. Lost in the discussion, though, has been Jays veteran infielder John McDonald.
"I'd imagine there's a reason behind that," McDonald said with a smile. "That's probably the last spot that they're going to worry about this offseason."
The spot that McDonald was referring to was the utility role, which he filled until Toronto made him the everyday shortstop on July 15. The 32-year-old McDonald is signed to a one-year, $500,000 deal this season and will become a free agent when the season is over.
