NEW YORK -- At this point, shutting down a player for the rest of the season just doesn't sound as catastrophic as it might have earlier in the year. After all, the "rest of the season," in Toronto's case, is just three games over the weekend against the Yankees.
Even so, the Blue Jays have decided to call it a year for left fielder Reed Johnson. The outfielder has been fighting a sharp pain in his right shin for more than a month, and Toronto believes that he has a stress fracture in his leg. And with only three games remaining, the Jays didn't feel it was worth the risk to keep him in the lineup.
"I think we're going to shut him down," manager John Gibbons said. "I think it's just something that developed, but he's hobbling pretty good now. He's had it a while. He's been playing through it for at least a month."
