DETROIT -- Toronto slipped in its first stint as the spoiler, dropping the opener of a three-game set, 4-3, to playoff-bound Detroit on Tuesday at Comerica Park. The Blue Jays can help determine whether the Tigers enter the postseason as the American League Central champs or the Wild Card winner.
Toronto (83-74), which dropped back into third place in the AL East with the loss, sent a batch of relievers to the mound against Detroit (95-62). Rookie right-hander Dustin McGowan (1-2), who has split time between the bullpen and the rotation over the last two seasons, started and gave up two unearned runs over two innings.
